A worthwhile destination the nearby South Tyrolean community of Aldein: The Bletterbach with its eponymous gorge. An imposing natural spectacle and popular hiking destination. Created during the Ice Age approximately 15,000 years ago, the gorge draws the attention of geologists today. One focus of their interest is found in the mineral layers of Etschtal vulcanite, generated approximately 280 million years ago.
Climb the Bletterbach Gorge on ladders and stairs! The GEO-trail through the Bletterbach Gorge leads from the car park under Lahneralm in Aldein and into the “Butterloch”.
It’s not for nothing that the locals call the gorge the “Grand Canyon of South Tyrol”. The impressive expanse: 8 km long and 400m deep! The Bletterbach Gorge gained fame due to great fossil finds. The rock formations carved out the by stream offer impressive motifs for photos and new perspectives with each step.
